Cervical Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is an advanced therapy used to treat chronic neck, shoulder, arm, and upper extremity pain when conservative treatments have not provided adequate relief. A small implanted device delivers mild electrical impulses to the spinal cord, helping interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain.
Procedure
Treatment typically begins with a temporary trial. During this minimally invasive procedure, thin electrical leads are placed near the spinal cord using fluoroscopic guidance. The leads are connected to an external stimulator that you wear for several days to evaluate your pain relief. If the trial is successful, a permanent system can be implanted during a separate outpatient procedure.
After Care
Following either the trial or permanent implant, you will receive instructions regarding activity restrictions while the leads heal into place. Most patients can gradually resume normal daily activities over the following weeks. Your care team will program and adjust your device settings to help maximize pain relief and improve your quality of life.
